Innovation Day

Roger Egolf, Ph. D.,associate professor of chemistry and Tai-Yin Huang, Ph. D., professor of physics, attended the 12th Annual Innovation Day, organized by the Society of Chemical Industry and the Chemical Heritage Foundation (CHF), October 5-6 in Philadelphia. Egolf is a council member of the CHF. Innovation Day is an invitation only event with a mission to provide a platform for early-career scientists and industry leaders to consider solutions to society's most pressing needs.

Presentations at the Asia Oceania Geosciences Society (AOGS) Conference

Dr. Tai-Yin Huang, Professor of Physics, was in Singapore attending the 12th annual Asia Oceania Geosciences Society (AOGS) Conference from Aug. 2 to Aug. 8, 2015. She co-convened and chaired the Atmospheric Electricity (AE) session. Together with her collaborators, she presented and co-presented 4 papers on lightning-related subjects in the AE session. In addition, she also gave an invited talk on the chemistry, dynamics, and energetics of airglow in the OH Airglow Layer session.

Integrated Energy Solutions for Entrepreneurs (IESE) Program launches webpage

In partnership with Invent Penn State, the IESE program aims to provide students a platform to conduct independent research with IESE faculty members in the areas of green energy, energy efficiency, visible light, wireless communication technology, marketing, corporate communication, and entrepreneurship. Commission For Women representatives meet with President Barron

The Commission for Women (CfW) held their annual meeting at UP with President Barron, May 20. Committee Chair, Dr. Tai-Yin Huang presented a recap of the recent CfW All Campus Meeting successfully held at our Lehigh Valley campus. Highlights of the meeting were the STEM panel, Connecting Humans and Nature through Conservation Experiences (CHANCE), and The Integrated Energy Solution for Entrepreneurs (IESE) program. Dr.Jenn Parker, Marianne Kiani, and Sharon Neders also attended.

Three faculty members granted promotion

5/18/2015 — Penn State Lehigh Valley has announced the promotion of three professors: Barbara Cantalupo, Ph.D., of Bethlehem, Douglas Hochstetler, Ph.D., of Breinigsville, and Tai-Yin Huang, Ph.D., of Lower Macungie.

Huang received promotion to full professor of physics. She is in her 13th year at the Penn State Lehigh Valley campus. Huang holds a Ph.D. (Physics) from University of Cincinnati, an M.S. (Physics) from University of Cincinnati, and a B.S. (Physics) from National Changhua University of Education in Taiwan. Huang's research interests include gravity waves dynamics, airglow chemistry, and energetics in the MLT region, Lightning-Induced Transient Emissions (LITEs) of airglow, sprites and elves, global warming and climate change, specializing in analytical approach, numerical simulation, and data analysis. Huang is an editorial board member of a few open access online journals and a book editor on Coupling of Thunderstorms and Lightning Discharges to Near-Earth Space. She has served as a reviewer for scientific journals and proposal reviewer for NSF programs. Her latest endeavors involve designing integrated energy solution for entrepreneurs and harvesting electrical energy released from lightning discharge. She owns Andromeda LED Lighting, LLC and several LED and other patents.

Paper Accepted for Publication

A paper titled "Gravity Waves-induced Airglow Temperature Variations, Phase Relationships, and Krassovsky Ratio for OH(8,3) Airglow, O2(0,1) Atmospheric Band, and O(1S) Greenline in the MLT Region" by Dr. Tai-Yin Huang, associate professor of physics, has been accepted for publication in the Journal of Atmospheric and Solar-Terrestrial Physics. The work was funded by the National Science Foundation.

Induction of Faculty into Sigma XI

Dr. Tai-Yin Huang, Associate Professor of Physics, and Dr. Jacqueline Mclaughlin, Associate Professor of Biology, were inducted into Sigma XI, the scientific research society devoted to the promotion of research in science. The event was held at Lehigh University on April 16.

The CfW Breakfast Meeting

Dr. Tai-Yin Huang, associate professor of physics, organized and chaired the 9th annual Commission for Women’s Campus Liaison Breakfast Meeting at the Penn Stater on April 2. Campus representatives from all Penn State campuses were invited to attend and present their campus activities. The CfW overviews, history, and the Mentoring Program were also presented. A round table discussion of challenges and opportunities was also among the meeting agenda items.

Lehigh Valley campus to host 2015 annual all campus Commission for Women meeting

3/24/2015 — This year’s annual all campus meeting of the Penn State Commission for Women will be held at the Lehigh Valley campus in Center Valley, Pa on April 22. Chancellor Ann Williams will welcome representatives from all Penn State campuses at 10:30 a.m. in room 135.

“The annual all campus meeting at Penn State offers a chance for people from all over the commonwealth to share information about their CfW activities, and to develop working relationships among the widely distributed community of people interested in CfW's mission,” stated David Passmore, co-chair of Penn State’s Commission for Women.

The Commission for Women Lehigh Valley will share their own new initiatives from 2014-15, which include a fundraiser excursion to Winterthur Museum sponsored by Corporate and Community Education; multiple campus-wide card-marking events for local senior living facilities; and the upcoming Walk a Mile in Her Shoes® event which will take place on April 7 to protest rape, sexual assault and gender violence.

Diane McAloon, chair of CfW Lehigh Valley, and Dr. Tai Yin Huang, co-chair of the CfW Campus Liaison Committee, have announced that there will be a panel discussion and a Q&A session following the Commission for Women’s annual business meeting and lunch.

The panel discussion is titled “STEM Initiatives at Penn State Lehigh Valley and Beyond...,” and will be conducted by Penn State Lehigh Valley STEM faculty members Dr. Tai Yin Huang, Dr. Julie Ealy, Dr. Jackie McLaughlin, Dr. Karen Kackley, Dr. Jennifer Parker, Alison Bonner and Maryam Kiani.

At the close of the event, campus tours will be available, and science lab observation will be welcomed.

New Research Venture: Integrated Energy Solution for Entrepreneurs

A new research initiative involving several disciplines, The Integrated Energy Solution for Entrepreneurs (IESE), will be introduced to the campus at the Engineering Club meeting, 1-2 p.m. on Feb. 23 in Rm. 219. The new research initiative, sponsored by Dr. Thigpen from the Office of Academic Affairs, aims to develop market-driven, technology-based inventions, and innovations in the area of integrated energy system utilizing energy efficient devices powered by green energy with the capability of two-way communications with visible light and wi-fi to address real world problems. Team leader Dr.Tai-Yin Huang, with Dr. Hal Scholz, Rick Martin, and Bob Wolfe will present the 2015-2016 research agenda. All are invited to attend.

AOGS-AS08: Atmospheric Electricity

The session entitled “Atmospheric Electricity” in the Atmospheric Sciences program has been accepted by the program committee of Asia Oceania Geosciences Society (AOGS). Dr. Tai-Yin Huang, associate professor of Physics, will co-convene the session with Dr. Cheng-Ling Kuo of National Central University and Dr. Alfred Chen of National Cheng-Kung University of Taiwan.

The 12th annual AOGS meeting will be held in Singapore from Aug. 2 to Aug. 7, 2015. Presentations are invited on the topics related to all physically-coupled processes associated with electromagnetic and hydrodynamic drivers in the atmosphere, such as Transient Luminous Events (TLE), thunderstorms, lightning, gravity waves, and etc.

Dr. Huang was invited by Dr. Kuo to visit the Physics Department of the National Central University during the winter break to further discuss their collaborative research projects.
